Melbourne short-term rentals range from compact city apartments to larger homes beyond the centre. The right choice depends on where you will spend your time, how late you expect to travel, whether you need parking and how much space the group genuinely requires.
Start with the neighbourhood
Map fixed commitments first. A conference, match, hospital visit, theatre booking or family event can make one side of the city much more practical than another. A place that appears close on a regional map may still require transfers or a long peak-time trip.
Also work backwards from the likely return time. The best area for a daytime itinerary may be less convenient after a late event, particularly when the group includes children, luggage or anyone with reduced mobility.
Central Melbourne for events and first visits
The CBD is useful for first-time visitors who want major cultural sites, shopping, dining and central transport within reach. It also places much of the Free Tram Zone nearby, although guests should confirm whether a property actually falls inside the boundary.
Docklands can work for waterfront activities, Marvel Stadium events and the western side of the city centre. Southbank suits riverfront dining and arts venues. East Melbourne is worth considering for the MCG, Fitzroy Gardens and the eastern edge of the centre. Building-level details still matter, so check lift access, overnight noise, luggage storage and parking.
Inner neighbourhoods for a more local stay
Carlton places guests near Lygon Street, Melbourne Museum and the northern edge of the CBD. Fitzroy and Collingwood suit visitors who want independent shops, food, live music and inner-north streets rather than a conventional central-city stay.
Richmond works well for sport, dining and transport on the eastern side. South Yarra and Prahran can suit guests who want shopping and rail or tram access south-east of the centre. St Kilda offers a bayside setting and a different pace from the CBD. Check the actual suburb and nearest stop rather than relying on a broad Melbourne label.
Apartment, house or serviced stay
A short-stay apartment can suit couples, solo travellers and small families who value a kitchen and laundry. A house may provide more bedrooms and shared space but can place the group farther from central attractions. A serviced apartment may add reception or housekeeping, although inclusions vary.
For a two-bedroom stay, inspect the bedding layout. Sleeps four can mean two permanent bedrooms, or one bedroom plus a sofa bed. Check air conditioning, blackout curtains, workspace, laundry, kitchen equipment and bathroom count. Families should ask about balcony security and stairs. Drivers should verify parking height, access and whether the space is included.
Transport, airports and booking checks
Melbourne uses trains, trams and buses. Transport Victoria says tram travel is free when a trip begins and ends inside the Free Tram Zone, which includes the CBD and Docklands. A valid fare is required beyond the zone. Weekend late-night services exist through the Night Network, but current journey planning is essential.
Confirm the full address or precise block, cancellation rules, cleaning charges, bond requirements, check-in method and building policies. Ask whether keys are collected on site and whether late arrival is supported. If quiet matters, ask about street exposure, tram noise, venues and nearby construction.

Melbourne stay questions
What does short-term rental mean on this page?
It means furnished visitor accommodation for a limited stay, not an ordinary residential tenancy. Individual properties set their own minimum stay and conditions.
Is the Melbourne CBD always the best base?
No. It is convenient for central activities, but Fitzroy, Richmond, St Kilda, Carlton and other inner neighbourhoods may better match a particular trip.
Do I need a car in central Melbourne?
Many central trips can be completed by public transport and walking. A car may be useful for outer areas or regional travel, but parking conditions should be checked before booking.
Does DirectStay currently list Melbourne properties?
No. DirectStay has no published Melbourne properties yet.
